About Dr. James N. Atkins

Dr. Atkins is originally from Amherst Massachusetts, he lived there until he moved to North Carolina in 1972. He went to Medical School at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem and then did his internship, residency and fellowship at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He spent 3 years working with the Public Health Service in the Indian Health Service in Gallup New Mexico, at the Gallup Indian Medical Center. He has lived in Goldsboro, NC for 20 years working in the field of Hematology and Oncology as well as Aidsology.
He has been involved with cancer research for the past 20 through the national clinical trials system. He is the principle investigator for the Cooperative Community Oncology Program site called the Southeast Cancer Control Consortium that is located in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia. He is interested not only in cancer treatment but in prevention. In order for patients to have an improved quality of life weight management is important in the treatment of cancer patients.
Dr. Atkins has been an advocate for healthy life style for many years. He is an avid runner and still competes in marathons. He has also participated in triathlons, and biathlons.
He believes that we can do almost anything that we set our minds to do, but you have to believe in your goals and in yourself. He has been known to say “We are responsible for the choices that we make”. “If you do not like the road that you are traveling, then do something about it and go in a different direction”. We are all on a journey traveling the roads of life, and we have the opportunity to modify or change the road that we travel. When we do that we will have a different experience.
